Pay for AI in Nepal Without an International Card
Every way to pay for AI tools from Nepal without a dollar card: virtual cards, NRB limits, resellers, and NPR-native options via eSewa, Khalti and Fonepay.
Every AI tool worth using bills in US dollars. Almost no Nepali debit card can pay in US dollars. That single mismatch is why so many people here end up on a shared login bought through Facebook Marketplace.
This is the complete list of ways around it, what each actually costs, and which ones are worth using.
Why your card gets declined
It is usually not the AI vendor rejecting you. Most debit cards issued by Nepali banks are domestic-only — they work on the national switch and at local ATMs, but are never enabled for international e-commerce. The transaction dies at your bank, before OpenAI or Anthropic ever sees it.
Even cards that do support international payments often have recurring transactions blocked by default, which is a separate permission. A card that worked once for a single purchase can still fail on a monthly subscription.
Retrying the same card does not help. You need to change something.
Option 1: Enable international payments on your existing card
Ask your bank to enable international/e-commerce transactions. Some banks do this through their mobile app; others need a branch visit and a form.
- Cost: usually free, sometimes a small annual card fee.
- Catch: not every bank offers it on every card tier, and forex markup still applies on each charge.
Worth doing first, because it costs nothing to ask.
Option 2: A prepaid dollar card
Several Nepali banks issue prepaid USD cards for online use. You load them in NPR and spend in USD.
- Cost: issuance fee plus forex markup.
- Catch: Nepal Rastra Bank caps how much foreign currency an individual can load for online use per year — historically in the region of USD 500 annually, though the exact figure and the paperwork have changed more than once, so confirm the current limit with your own bank rather than trusting a blog post (including this one).
If you only need one subscription, this works. If you want several AI tools, the annual cap becomes the binding constraint.
Option 3: Resellers and shared accounts
The most common workaround in Nepal, and the one we would push back on hardest. You pay a reseller in NPR via eSewa or Khalti, and get a login.
- Cost: roughly Rs 499–2,249 depending on whether the account is shared or private.
- Catch: a shared account means your chat history sits in a window other people also use. There is no dependable long-term memory. Account sharing breaks the vendor’s terms of service, so the account can be suspended without warning — usually with no refund and no recourse.
We wrote up the specifics in the risks of a shared ChatGPT account. The savings are real; so is the downside.
Option 4: Officially-localised plans
Some vendors now price locally. ChatGPT Go is available in Nepal at roughly Rs 709/month and can be paid in NPR, which removes the card problem entirely.
- Cost: Rs 709/month at time of writing.
- Catch: one vendor, one model family. If you want Claude for writing and Gemini for long documents, you are back to buying multiple subscriptions.

Option 5: Skip the card problem entirely
The other route is to use a platform that bills in NPR natively, so there is no foreign transaction to fail in the first place.
That is what we built Nuvaa to do. You pay through eSewa, Khalti or Fonepay, in rupees, on your own private account. There is no subscription at all: start free at Rs 0, then top up credits from Rs 100 and spend them across GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek and 300+ other models on one balance. Rs 1 buys 10 credits, larger top-ups include bonus credits, and credits never expire while your account is active.
No dollar card, no VPN, no shared login, and no monthly commitment for a month you barely used it.
Which option to pick
| Situation | Best route |
|---|---|
| You only want ChatGPT, and your bank cooperates | Enable international payments, or ChatGPT Go |
| You want one tool and have NRB headroom | Prepaid dollar card |
| You want several models without several subscriptions | NPR-native pay-as-you-go |
| You are considering a shared account | Please read the risks first |
The honest summary: if a single vendor covers your needs and your bank will enable international payments, the official route is cleanest. The moment you want more than one model — or you want to stop paying for months you did not use — paying in NPR per-use is the cheaper and less fragile option.
